Detailed description
Detailed description
The FA-SC59V flexible antenna by Icom is a marine radio communication component designed for portable maritime transceivers. Supplied as standard equipment with the 6 W IC-M37E portable marine VHF, it ensures transmission and reception of radio signals in a nautical environment. Its flexible structure is engineered to absorb mechanical stress, impacts, and torsions inherent to maneuvers aboard vessels, while maintaining the device's buoyancy capabilities.
Technical specifications and connectivity
This antenna is tuned specifically for the standard marine VHF frequency band (156 to 163 MHz), ensuring an optimal standing wave ratio (SWR) for the radio's maximum transmission power. It attaches to the transceiver via an SMA-type connector. The threading and base of the FA-SC59V incorporate a compression seal that, once the antenna is screwed onto the chassis, ensures the radio's protection rating is maintained (such as the IP57 standard of the IC-M37E, corresponding to immersion at 1 meter for 30 minutes).
Positioning and comparison within the marine ecosystem
Within Icom's range, the FA-SC59V differs from the FA-S59V model (which equips the IC-M73EURO series). While the FA-S59V offers a wide bandwidth of 150 to 174 MHz suitable for professionals using additional terrestrial channels, the FA-SC59V is strictly optimized for performance in the civil marine band. Compared to using an AD-98FSC adapter (which converts the SMA output to BNC to connect the radio to a fixed mast antenna), this flexible antenna prioritizes mobility and reduced footprint for the user on deck. Compared to generic replacement antennas or competing brands like Standard Horizon or Garmin, this original Icom model guarantees exact mechanical compatibility of the threading, a critical condition for preserving IPX7/IP57 waterproofing and the "Float'n Flash" strobe light activation function in case of immersion.
