The Garmin GMR Fantom™ 124 radar can detect targets from 6 metres to 96 nautical miles. This wide range allows effective detection at both short and long distances.

The GMR Fantom™ 124 radar is a 120 W solid-state system. It delivers an output power equivalent to that of a 15 kW magnetron, providing high detection performance.

The GMR Fantom™ 124 features a 4-foot beam antenna, which corresponds to approximately 121.92 centimeters.

The MotionScope™ technology uses the Doppler effect to identify and highlight moving targets on the screen. This includes vessels, severe weather conditions, and flocks of birds. These targets are colored differently depending on whether they are approaching or moving away from your vessel, making it easier to prevent collisions and locate fishing grounds.

The GMR Fantom™ 124 radar offers rotation speeds of 24 and 48 revolutions per minute (RPM), allowing the scan rate to be adjusted based on navigation requirements.

The GMR Fantom™ 124 radar has a horizontal beam width of 1.8°, providing high-resolution imaging of targets.

The GMR Fantom™ 124 is a solid-state radar, which provides greater reliability and better energy efficiency compared to traditional magnetron radars.

Pulse compression technology is integrated into the GMR Fantom™ 124 radar to maximize transmitted energy. This enhances target detection and identification, particularly at varying ranges.

The True Echo Trails display faded traces of targets, corrected for the boat's rotation. This correction requires the use of an autopilot or a compatible heading sensor. This feature enables rapid tracking of potential threats by clearly showing the targets' trajectories.

For radar installation, consider the following points:

The radar must be installed out of reach of people, with the vertical beam above head height. It must be mounted high above the vessel’s keel line with minimal obstruction of the beam. The mounting surface must be flat, parallel to the waterline, and sufficiently robust to support the radar’s weight. Avoid mounting it near heat sources (exhausts, lights) or at the same height as spreaders or mast crossbars. It must be kept away from a magnetic compass (minimum distance specified in the product’s technical data). Other electronic equipment and cables must be more than 2 m (6.5 ft) from the radar beam path. GPS antennas must be either above or below the radar beam path. The radar must be at least 1 m (40 in) from any transmitting equipment and cables carrying radio signals (VHF). It must be at least 2 m (6.5 ft) from SSB radios (single sideband).

For radar installation, you will need the following tools:

The radar, and the voltage converter if applicable, must be connected to a proper ground (water ground) using a 3.31 mm² (12 AWG) copper wire, not included. It is critical to connect this wire to the water ground, not the battery’s negative terminal. After connection, the crimp connector and ground screw must be coated with marine sealant to ensure waterproofing.

To achieve the best possible performance and avoid potential damage to the device or the vessel, installation by a qualified marine technician is recommended.

When routing cables, it may be necessary to drill a hole up to 32 mm (1 1/4 in) in diameter in the mounting surface. It is essential to apply marine sealant around the hole after cables are installed to ensure a watertight seal. Cables must not be routed near moving objects, high-heat sources, or through doors and bilge areas. To prevent interference, network and power cables must not run parallel to other cables (radio antenna lines, power cables); if unavoidable, they must be shielded with a metal conduit or EMI shielding.

The GMR Fantom™ 124 radar voltage converter requires an input voltage of 10 to 32 Vdc. It should be installed as close as possible to the power source and connected directly to the boat’s battery.

When connecting the power cable, do not remove the inline fuse holder. The radar's power cable contains a 15 A fuse that must not be removed. If a voltage converter is used, an additional 30 A fuse must be installed between the converter and the battery. Both fuses (15 A and 30 A) must be in place for the radar to operate correctly and to prevent any risk of fire or overheating.

The GMR Fantom™ 124 radar is compatible with the Garmin BlueNet™ network and the Garmin Marine Network, enabling easy integration with other compatible Garmin devices aboard your vessel.

The radar software can be updated in several ways:

Via a memory card: If your chartplotter has a memory card reader or if a memory card reader accessory is connected to the Garmin marine network, you can load the latest software version onto a memory card (up to 32 GB, formatted as FAT32, speed class 10 recommended) using the Garmin Express™ application.Via the ActiveCaptain™ app: If your chartplotter is equipped with Wi-Fi® technology, you can use the ActiveCaptain™ app on your mobile device to download and install the latest software updates.It is recommended to ensure all Garmin devices on board are up to date for optimal operation.
