The Garmin GMR xHD3 6' radar antenna is an advanced solution for navigation and target detection. Part of the GMR xHD3 series, this 6-foot open-array antenna is designed for navigators requiring enhanced precision and optimized radar performance. It integrates natively with Garmin ecosystems via Garmin BlueNet or Garmin Marine Network, ensuring seamless compatibility and synergy with other Garmin instruments. Its design prioritizes reliability and technical performance, making it a robust choice for vessels needing superior range and detection clarity compared to compact radomes, without the bulk of larger open-array antennas.
Precision and technical performance
The GMR xHD3 6' delivers notable target detection precision thanks to its open-array antenna design. The radar beam propagates vertically with a beamwidth of 11.5° above and 11.5° below the radiating element, enabling extended coverage. For vessels with pronounced bow angles at cruising speed, the installation angle can be adjusted to slightly tilt the beam toward the static waterline using shims if necessary. Mounting at height, above the vessel’s keel line and with minimal obstructions, maximizes detection range and minimizes blind sectors or false echoes.
Network integration and installation
This radar antenna requires 10 to 32 V DC power, with direct battery connection possible (11 to 32 V DC for some models without an included voltage converter). A 15 A inline fuse is integrated into the radar power cable, and an additional 30 A fuse is required between the voltage converter (if used) and the battery. Integration into the Garmin network is via Garmin BlueNet or Garmin Marine Network. Professional installation is recommended and involves drilling 15 mm mounting holes and a 32 mm cable pass-through hole if needed. The kit includes the mounting template, Petrolatum Primer, plastic shoulder washers, threaded studs, nuts and washers for base mounting, as well as hex head screws, spring washers, and flat washers for antenna attachment. Note that the ground cable is not provided and requires a 3.31 mm² (12 AWG) copper wire.
Physical installation optimization
For optimal performance and enhanced safety, the GMR xHD3 6' installation must account for several factors. The radar must be mounted out of reach of people, with the vertical beam above head height, and at a minimum safety distance specified to avoid radiofrequency exposure. It must be kept away from heat sources (exhausts, lights) and positioned at a different level from horizontal spreaders. To avoid interference, the radar must be installed at least 2 m (6.5 ft) from other electronic equipment and cables, 1 m (40 in) from transmitters and VHF cables, and 2 m (6.5 ft) from SSB radios. GPS antennas must be positioned either above or below the radar beam path. These considerations ensure the GMR xHD3 6' operates optimally and maintains onboard safety.
