Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed specifically for boats equipped with Volvo Penta electronic steering systems (IPS and joystick sterndrive), the Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-Wire autopilot pack offers a dedicated integration solution. This system provides advanced autopilot capabilities, leveraging the vessel’s existing steer-by-wire technology for precise heading control.
Technology and performance
At its core, the system features the Reactor 40 Course Control Unit (CCU), equipped with a 9-axis solid-state Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS). This technology enables flexible CCU installation, allowing mounting in almost any orientation and location while minimizing heading errors and power consumption. The autopilot includes adaptive heading correction, responding to water conditions to maintain course even in pitching or rolling conditions.
Integration and features
This pack is supplied without the GHC 20 autopilot display, targeting users who already own a compatible Garmin chartplotter or GHC 50 autopilot instrument. It includes the Volvo IPS gateway, essential for communication between the Garmin autopilot and the Volvo Penta electronic steering system. Once connected to a Garmin chartplotter or GHC 50, the system offers functions such as heading hold and tacking in steps. With an optional wind sensor, it extends capabilities to wind hold and tacking/gybing maneuvers, as well as route tracking and Auto Guidance+™.
Design and installation
The pack components, including the CCU, gateway, and audible alarm, are built with corrosion-resistant materials and sealed housings (the CCU meets IEC 529 IPX7 standards), ensuring durability in marine environments. The CCU measures 91.4 mm in diameter and weighs 159 g, while the gateway measures 130 mm × 60 mm × 25 mm and weighs less than 28 g. Commissioning is simplified with quick setup and calibration assistants such as the Dockside Wizard and Sea Trial Wizard, reducing installation and tuning time. The system requires a 9–16 V NMEA 2000 power supply.
