Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for boats with hydraulic steering, the Garmin Reactor™ 40 autopilot kit with SmartPump v2 (part number 010-00705-78) delivers a responsive and reliable steering system. This pack integrates advanced technologies for precise navigation and optimized helm management.
Advanced autopilot system and SmartPump v2
The system core is the SmartPump v2, an electronic control unit (ECU) measuring 197 x 190 x 244 mm and weighing 7.5 kg, operating between -15°C and 55°C. Made of aluminum alloy and featuring a brushless motor, this pump is designed for enhanced reliability, extended lifespan, reduced power consumption, and silent operation. Its "one-size-fits-most" design eliminates the need to select a specific pump size, supporting steering cylinders from 4 to 24 cubic inches and achieving lock-to-lock in 7 seconds for cylinders up to 17 cubic inches. It integrates a brushless motor that prevents helm lock due to hardware or software issues. Flow rate is configurable from 0 to 2.4 liters per minute.
Heading accuracy and integration
The Reactor 40 course computer unit (CCU), 91.4 mm in diameter and weighing 159 g, is waterproof to IPX7 standards. It integrates a 9-axis AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference System), allowing mounting in almost any orientation while minimizing heading errors, course deviations, and rudder movements. This system contributes to optimized power consumption and improved comfort, even in rough sea conditions. Shadow Drive™ technology enables instant manual helm takeover, automatically disengaging the autopilot when the helmsperson intervenes and reactivating it once a stable course is maintained. The system fully integrates with compatible Garmin chartplotters via the NMEA 2000 network, offering complete control and advanced features such as Auto-Guidance+™ with G3 charts. Wireless remote control capabilities are also available via compatible Garmin devices such as the Reactor autopilot remote or certain quatix® smartwatches.
Installation and durability
The system is designed for simplified setup and calibration, reducing installation time. SmartPump v2 components are made of anodized aluminum and nickel-plated steel for corrosion resistance in marine environments. Installation requires knowledge of marine hydraulic and electrical systems, with configuration assistants such as Dockside Wizard and Sea Trial Wizard to guide the user. The CCU must be mounted on a rigid surface, away from magnetic interference, and the SmartPump in a dry, protected location, ideally near the steering cylinder for installations requiring high pressure. The kit includes the Reactor 40 CCU, SmartPump v2, Shadow Drive, a buzzer, NMEA 2000 cables (2 meters), an NMEA 2000 power cable, NMEA 2000 T-connectors, male and female terminations, and the necessary documentation.
