Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for clear marine communication and improved situational awareness, the Garmin Signal™ VHF 220 is a fixed marine radio integrating an AIS receiver. This model features a 3.5-inch edge-to-edge color touchscreen, providing an intuitive interface for navigation and call management.
Advanced communication and safety
The Signal™ VHF 220 is a Class D DSC radio, capable of up to 25 W transmit power for extended range. For optimized audio clarity, it integrates adaptive noise reduction using machine-learning algorithms, eliminating interference from wind, waves, and the engine. The squelch is automatically managed, with an option for manual adjustment. A VHF audio playback function allows you to replay missed messages on any channel for up to three minutes, with the ability to record three channels simultaneously. Its advanced standby modes continuously monitor all VHF channels in the background, including Channel 16 and pre-set favorite channels.
AIS receiver and network integration
The integrated SOTDMA Class B AIS receiver provides essential information about nearby AIS-equipped vessels, including range, heading, speed, and crossing situation, enabling better decision-making and intuitive initiation of DSC contacts directly from the AIS screen. It is important to note that the VHF 220 is an AIS receiver only, unlike the Garmin Signal VHF 400, which includes a Class B AIS transponder. The device integrates a GPS for accurate position reports and connects to an NMEA 2000 network, ensuring seamless integration with Garmin chartplotters and sharing GPS, DSC, and AIS data. Garmin BlueNet™ Network connectivity enables linking with compatible Garmin BlueNet chartplotters and Garmin Signal RM 100 remote stations, offering multi-station control and intercom functions. Integrated Wi-Fi® facilitates software updates via the ActiveCaptain® app and initial MMSI number configuration.
Installation and robustness
With a compact and rugged design, the Garmin Signal™ VHF 220 is built to withstand harsh marine environments, as evidenced by its IPX7 waterproof rating. It is compatible with 12V and 24V electrical systems. Installation requires an external VHF antenna (not included). For upgrades, a retrofit kit is available separately, allowing replacement of Garmin VHF 210/215 and VHF 110/115 radios. A bracket mounting kit is also offered as an option for specific installations. The included hand-microphone features a 5 W RMS speaker, capable of 95 dBA at 0.5 meters, and supports connection to an external speaker and a voice pipe compatible with listen-in function.
