Detailed description
Detailed description
The Lowrance Point-1 GPS antenna is a compact and high-performance positioning and heading solution designed for integration into NMEA 2000 networks. This sensor combines a 32-channel GPS/GLONASS receiver with an integrated electronic compass, providing essential position and heading data for navigation and fishfinder systems.
Positioning accuracy and performance
The Point-1 delivers fast position updates up to 10 Hz, ensuring a precise and smooth track on your chartplotter, even at high speeds. Its horizontal accuracy is 3 meters, which is sufficient for most marine applications. Unlike basic GPS sensors, the Point-1 also includes an electronic compass, providing heading data with an accuracy of +/- 3° and a turn rate accuracy of +/- 3°. These specifications set it apart from simple GPS antennas, making it a versatile sensor for Lowrance, Simrad, and B&G systems compatible with NMEA 2000.
Integration and robustness
With compact dimensions of 90 mm in diameter and 30 mm in height, weighing only 0.14 kg, the Lowrance Point-1 antenna is easily installed via a flush mount or standard mast installation. It connects directly to the NMEA 2000® network via a Micro C connector, simplifying installation and interconnection with other devices. Its power supply ranges from 5 V DC to 18 V DC, with low power consumption of less than 2 W (< 100 mA at 12 V DC). Designed for the marine environment, it operates between -25°C and +60°C and features an IPX67 rating (splash-proof), ensuring reliability at sea. While its integrated compass provides acceptable heading performance for most uses, demanding applications requiring superior stabilized heading accuracy—such as radar overlays or sophisticated autopilots—may benefit from a dedicated sensor like the B&G Precision-9, which offers more robust performance in these scenarios. The Point-1 remains a cost-effective and highly efficient option for the majority of recreational sailors and anglers.
Supported NMEA 2000 protocols
The Point-1 transmits a full range of essential NMEA 2000 PGNs, including system time data (126992), vessel heading (127250), rate of turn (127251), attitude (127257), magnetic variation (127258), GNS DOP (129539), satellites in view (129540), rapid update position (129825), COG & SOG (129826), and general position data (129829). This extended compatibility ensures seamless integration with a wide variety of multifunction displays and navigation systems.
