Detailed description
Detailed description
The P79S SmartDucer glue-on depth sounder transducer from RAYMARINE, part number T70278, is a versatile solution for acquiring depth and temperature data without hull drilling. Designed for internal installation, it transmits data directly over the NMEA 2000 network, eliminating the need for a dedicated external sounder module. This approach simplifies system architecture and reduces integration costs for vessels equipped with MFDs or NMEA 2000-compatible instruments.
SmartDucer technology and connectivity
The SmartDucer concept integrates signal processing electronics directly into the transducer. The P79S uses standard frequencies of 50 kHz and 200 kHz, providing coverage suitable for various depths and conditions. Connection is via a DeviceNet connector, compliant with NMEA 2000 specifications. RAYMARINE includes a SeaTalkNG adapter, ensuring plug-and-play integration with RAYMARINE navigation systems, similar to iTC-5 sensors or STNG modules.
Positioning and applications
Unlike traditional through-hull transducers such as the B744V or B164, which require drilling, the P79S is mounted inside the fiberglass hull using epoxy resin. This makes it ideal for owners seeking to avoid hull alterations or for racing sailboats where hydrodynamic drag must be minimized. While it may offer slight signal attenuation compared to a through-hull transducer, its performance remains suitable for coastal and offshore navigation up to significant depths. It serves as a practical alternative to external transducers for mid-sized boats, where installation simplicity is a key criterion.
