Fixed and portable VHF radios: choosing the right option
The choice between a fixed and a handheld VHF radio depends on your type of navigation and your specific needs. Fixed VHF radios offer greater range and easy integration with other navigation equipment, while handheld VHF radios offer flexibility and can serve as a backup in case of a power outage. It is essential to consider transmission power, weatherproofing, and the presence of features such as DSC (Digital Selective Calling).
Ais: to identify and be identified
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is an automatic transmission system that allows vessels to be identified and their position tracked in real time. It significantly improves safety at sea by providing crucial information about other vessels nearby, such as their name, heading, speed, and status. The choice between a Class A or Class B AIS transponder depends on the size of your vessel and the area of navigation.
VHF and AIS antennas: optimizing range
The performance of your VHF/AIS system depends largely on the quality of the antenna. A well-chosen and correctly installed antenna maximizes the range and clarity of communications. It is important to consider the antenna's length, gain, and impedance, as well as the quality of the coaxial cable used for the connection.
