SmartDrive: Garmin’s linear actuator for sailboat autopilots
The SmartDrive™ actuator is Garmin’s new linear actuator for sailboat autopilots. It combines a brushless motor, an integrated ECU and a contactless rudder position sensor to simplify autopilot architecture while reducing mechanical wear.
Reference 010-02794-12 is the SmartDrive alone, intended to complete or replace a compatible Reactor 40 Sail assembly. Garmin specifies a maximum intermittent thrust of 1,050 lbf, a stroke of 300 mm and compatibility with sailboats and catamarans up to 15 tonnes displacement.
Skysat advice
Before ordering, verify the tiller geometry, usable stroke and actuator working angle. At mid-stroke, the base-to-axis dimension is 700 mm and Garmin limits tilt to 5 degrees above or below center. Provide a protected 10–32 Vdc power supply, the CCU/SmartDrive link and the autopilot’s NMEA 2000 network.
