Detailed description
Detailed description
The Airmar P66 transducer from Garmin is a transom-mount (TA) multifunction solution designed for recreational boaters seeking accurate depth, surface speed, and water temperature data. With 600 W RMS power and dual 50/200 kHz frequencies, it offers versatility suited for coastal and freshwater fishing on powerboats.
Acoustic and hydrodynamic performance
Featuring a 44 mm (1.75") oversized ceramic element, the P66 generates focused beams for detailed water column and bottom structure detection. At 50 kHz, it has a 45° (-3dB) beam for a depth range up to 366 meters (1,200 feet), while at 200 kHz, its 11° to 12° (-3dB) beam reaches 213 meters (700 feet). Its hydrodynamic design, with a rounded nose, reduces turbulence beneath the acoustic face, ensuring stable and clear readings even at high speeds up to 44 knots (81 km/h or 50 MPH). A patented noise suppression system improves performance by 5 to 8 knots (6 to 9 MPH) compared to standard builds.
Design and integration
The P66’s plastic housing includes an integrated water flow channel that protects the paddlewheel, ensuring accurate speed measurements. The transom-mount bracket is designed to pivot upward on frontal impact, protecting the sensor. It accommodates transom angles from 2° to 22°. The transducer can be removed from its bracket without tools for maintenance or storage. With a 10-meter (33-foot) cable and an 8-pin Garmin connector, it is ready for integration with compatible Garmin sounder systems. Its weight is 0.5 kg (1.1 lb).
Positioning in the Airmar lineup
The Airmar P66 serves as a reference model offering solid performance for 600 W applications on vessels up to 8 meters (26 feet), or up to 12 meters (40 feet) according to Airmar’s brochure. For users requiring higher sensitivity and power, Airmar offers alternatives like the TM258 and TM260. The TM258, a 1 kW transducer, delivers 25 times the sensitivity at 50 kHz and 16 times at 200 kHz. The TM260, also 1 kW, features 50 times the sensitivity at 50 kHz and 13 times at 200 kHz, positioning it as a high-performance model. The P66 is therefore a balanced choice for most navigation and fishing needs on recreational vessels, offering reliable performance without the complexity or cost of competition-grade transducers.
