Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin marine camera GC™ 245, white model, is a high-performance surveillance solution designed for integration with Garmin navigation systems. Positioned as an advanced option compared to simpler cameras from the brand, it stands out with its adjustable lens module, offering increased flexibility for adjusting the field of view. This module allows lens tilt up to 62 degrees downward and 90-degree rotation clockwise or counterclockwise, complemented by up to 80-degree rotation of the entire housing after mounting to the base plate. A red dot indicates the top of the lens to facilitate orientation, with recommended installation of the lens pointing downward at approximately 35 degrees relative to the waterline for optimal viewing of objects close to the vessel.
Integration and network connectivity
At the heart of this system, the GC™ 245 relies on the included GVAM 10 black housing, which provides connectivity and power. This housing integrates a 2-meter Garmin BlueNet™ cable and a 2-meter power cable, simplifying installation. The camera is compatible with Garmin BlueNet and Garmin Marine Network technologies. For optimal performance and support of future updates, it is recommended to connect the GVAM 10 directly to a Garmin BlueNet chartplotter or a Garmin BlueNet 20 switch. In the presence of a Garmin Marine Network, a Garmin Marine Network adapter cable (part number 010-12531-01, sold separately) is required. Garmin warns against modifying the supplied 8-meter (26.25 feet) coaxial cable and offers a 25-meter (82 feet) coaxial cable (part number 010-13026-02) for installations requiring greater range.
Installation considerations and robustness
Installing the Garmin GC™ 245 camera and GVAM 10 housing requires careful attention to detail. The camera must be mounted above the waterline. The GVAM 10 housing must be installed in a ventilated, non-submerged location, at least 71 cm (28 inches) from noisy electrical sources to avoid interference. The installation process includes drilling pilot holes (2.8 mm for the camera, 4.5 mm for the black housing, 9.5 mm optionally for internal camera cable routing) and using a specific torque wrench for SMA connectors (9 kgf-cm). The use of marine sealant such as 3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 is recommended to ensure watertightness. Garmin emphasizes using the supplied cables and connectors to maintain warranty validity, highlighting the robust design expected for marine environments, while requiring compliant installation for durability.
