Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GMR 1234/1236 xHD3 radar pedestal (010-02779-10) serves as the structural base for the GMR 1234 xHD3 (4-foot antenna) and GMR 1236 xHD3 (6-foot antenna) open-array radar systems, both rated at 12 kW. Designed for offshore navigation and fishing, it incorporates advanced high-definition image processing technology, positioning these radars among Garmin’s top-tier solutions for marine target detection.
Advanced radar system performance and features
This pedestal supports antennas with a 12 kW output power, enabling a maximum range of up to 96 nautical miles and a minimum range of 20 meters. Available rotation speeds of 24 and 48 revolutions per minute ensure rapid refresh rates. The system integrates Scan Averaging technology—a first for Garmin magnetron radars—which filters sea clutter and interference for clearer target detection. The angular adjustment of target size optimizes display at all range scales. Additional features include True Echo Trails, dual-range overlay on charts, Dynamic Auto Gain, Auto Bird Gain and Bird Mode Preset for fish finding, MARPA target tracking (up to 30 targets with additional sensors), Guard Zone, and Radar Overlay. The Dynamic Sea Filter automatically adjusts to sea conditions, while the Quiet Open-Array Drive Motor ensures quiet operation.
Robust design and technical specifications
The pedestal measures 520 x 328 x 314 mm (20.5" L x 12.9" H x 12.4" D) and features IPX6 waterproofing, with the entire radar system rated at IPX6. It is compatible with 10–32 V DC or 11–32 V DC power supplies. Power consumption is 18 W in standby mode and 70 W during normal transmission. For antennas, the GMR 1234 xHD3 (4-foot) measures 1325 x 122 x 170 mm with a 1.8° horizontal beam width, while the GMR 1236 xHD3 (6-foot) measures 1938 x 122 x 170 mm with a 1.1° horizontal beam width. Both models have a 23° vertical beam width. The maximum wind load supported is 80 knots, extendable to 100 knots with an optional voltage converter for the 1234/1236 models.
Integration and installation
Installing the Garmin GMR 1234/1236 xHD3 radar pedestal requires careful attention to ensure antenna stability and precise orientation, critical for signal quality and detection range. The process involves precise drilling (15 mm mounting holes, optional 32 mm cable pass-through) and torque-tightening of fasteners (14.7 N·m or 11 lbf·ft for the pedestal, 0.81 kgf·m or 70 lbf·in for the antenna) to withstand dynamic stresses. Wiring must be managed meticulously, including power supply via a dedicated voltage converter (if applicable, 10–32 V DC input) with a 15 A inline fuse, and grounding to a water mass. The radar should be mounted beyond human reach, above head height, with minimal beam obstruction and at a safe distance from heat sources, other electronics, and magnetic compasses to avoid interference. Power cable extensions require specific wire gauges to prevent malfunctions. The radar housing (and voltage converter, if used) must be grounded with a 3.31 mm² (12 AWG) copper wire.
