Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GMR 18 HD3 radome is a compact and high-performance 18-inch marine radar designed to enhance situational awareness at sea. Part of Garmin’s new HD3 generation, it features BlueNet™ connectivity for seamless integration with modern Garmin navigation systems. With dimensions of 508 mm in diameter and 248 mm in height, and weighing 7.0 kg, this radome is suitable for a wide range of vessels. Its IPX7 waterproof rating ensures durability in marine environments.
Technical performance and detection capabilities
The GMR 18 HD3 operates on the X-band (9.38 to 9.44 GHz) with a 4 kW transmission power, delivering a maximum range of 36 nautical miles. Short-range detection is ensured down to a minimum of 20 meters, providing excellent visibility of nearby targets. The 43 cm antenna rotates at 24 rpm, characterized by low noise levels and optimized power consumption. The radar beam has a horizontal width of 5.2° and a vertical width of 25°. An 8-bit color resolution ensures superior target separation, improving the clarity and precision of information displayed on your chartplotter.
Advanced features and system integration
This radar includes intelligent functions such as Dynamic Auto Gain, which automatically adjusts radar levels for optimal performance, and Dynamic Sea Filter, which automatically manages clutter caused by sea state. For enhanced safety, MARPA target tracking allows monitoring of other vessels and collision avoidance (requires an external heading sensor, sold separately). The GMR 18 HD3 supports dual-radar functionality and radar overlay on chartplotter displays (an autopilot or heading sensor is recommended for optimal results). The timed transmission mode reduces power consumption by specifying transmission times. This radome stands out for its BlueNet™ connectivity, offering improved performance and better support for future updates compared to older Garmin Marine Network systems, while remaining backward compatible via an adapter cable (part number 010-12531-01).
