Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GPSMAP® 8417 is a multifunction chartplotter designed for advanced marine navigation and monitoring systems. Part of the 8400/8600 series, this model stands out for its extended video integration capabilities and robustness, positioning it as a reliable solution for vessels requiring comprehensive monitoring.
Video integration and advanced monitoring
The GPSMAP 8417 offers superior network camera integration, enabling video streams to be displayed on any Garmin Marine Network chartplotter screen. It can simultaneously display multiple video streams on a single combined screen, enhancing on-board situational awareness. Unlike some earlier series (such as the 8000, 8200, 8500, 7x1, 7400, and 7600), the GPSMAP 8417 includes an integrated video encoder function. To connect standard Ethernet equipment, including network cameras and switches, a Garmin PoE isolation coupler (part number 010-10580-10) is required to protect the chartplotter. Garmin recommends a maximum of five simultaneous video sources for optimal network performance.
Extended compatibility and intuitive control
This chartplotter is compatible with FLIR® M and MD series cameras, which are automatically detected on the network for IP models. Older analog FLIR cameras can be manually paired. The touch interface allows intuitive camera control, including pinch-to-zoom and pan/tilt via swipe. Custom presets can be saved for each camera, setting position and zoom level. The GPSMAP 8417 also supports FLIR dual-payload models, handling composite V/IR and IR-only video streams.
Tracking and navigation features
The GPSMAP 8417 integrates advanced camera tracking functions, such as Compass Lock, Vessel Lock, and tracking of AIS, MARPA, or waypoint targets (slew-to-cue). These capabilities require connection of specific sensors via the Garmin Marine Network or NMEA 2000®, including a marine camera compatible with tracking (such as a recent FLIR IP video camera), a GPS antenna, and a heading sensor (9-axis recommended). For AIS or MARPA tracking, a compatible AIS receiver or compatible radar device is also required. Cutout dimensions are 372.0 mm width and 293.5 mm height. The GPSMAP 8417, while classified as a "legacy_supported" model, continues to provide a high-performance and reliable platform for the most complex navigation and monitoring requirements.
