Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GT12M-THF through-hull fishfinder is specifically designed for vessels with a deadrise angle of 12 degrees. Made from brass, it is optimized for installation in fiberglass, wood, or composite hulls. This brass design distinguishes it from the GT15M-THF fishfinder, which is made of stainless steel and includes galvanic isolation components for aluminum or steel hulls. Installation of the GT12M-THF is strictly not recommended on metal hulls (aluminum or steel) to avoid galvanic corrosion.
Technical specifications and installation
Installing the Garmin GT12M-THF requires a 73 mm (2 7/8 in) hole saw for fiberglass, wood, or composite hulls. A fast-curing marine-grade flexible sealant is essential to ensure a watertight seal below the waterline. It is critical to verify that the preconfigured 12-degree angle of the fishfinder matches the measured deadrise angle at the installation point to guarantee optimal sonar performance. Garmin recommends updating the chartplotter’s software after installing the fishfinder for full compatibility and enhanced performance.
Positioning and usage recommendations
The GT12M-THF fishfinder must be mounted in an area with clean, non-turbulent water, away from propellers, keels, water intakes, or any element that could create air bubbles. On outboard or inboard/sterndrive powerboats, it should be installed forward of the engine. For full-keel sailboats, a slight forward-facing angle parallel to the longitudinal axis is recommended. The fishfinder must only be operated when fully submerged to prevent overheating damage. The brass construction ensures durability suited to its intended installation environment.
