Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin GMR Fantom 254/256 radar pedestal, part number 010-01364-30, serves as the structural and electrical foundation for the open-array radar antennas in the GMR Fantom 254 and GMR Fantom 256 series. Designed for integration with Garmin multifunction displays (MFD) from the GPSMAP 7x2, 9x2, 10x2, 12x2, 7400, 7600, 8000, 8200, 8400, and 8600 series, this pedestal supports solid-state radars with a power output of 250 watts and pulse compression technology. It provides detection ranges from 6 meters to 96 nautical miles and rotation speeds of 24 or 48 rpm, with the higher speed available in single-range mode at settings below 12 NM and MotionScope disabled.
Technical specifications and integration
The GMR Fantom 254/256 pedestal measures 42.1 x 36.4 x 27.1 cm and weighs 15.7 kg. It is rated for maximum wind loads of 80 knots and has an IPX6 waterproof rating. Power input is 10–32 V DC. The pedestal accommodates the installation of 4-foot (Fantom 254) or 6-foot (Fantom 256) open-array antennas, which differ in horizontal beam width: 1.8 degrees for the Fantom 254 and 1.25 degrees for the Fantom 256. The vertical beam width is 23 degrees for both models. The system includes advanced features such as MotionScope target detection, automatic MARPA tracking for up to 30 targets, dynamic sea and gain clutter suppression, echo trails display, and radar overlay on charts.
Installation and safety considerations
The pedestal must be mounted on a flat, rigid surface parallel to the vessel’s waterline, away from heat sources, strong electromagnetic fields, and human traffic areas. The radar beam extends 11.5 degrees above and below the radiating element. A clearance of more than 2 meters is recommended between the radar beam path and other electronic equipment or cables. Minimum distances of 1 meter from transmission equipment and radio signal cables, and 2 meters from HF radios (SSB), are required. The power wiring is protected by a 15 A fuse, and an additional 30 A fuse is required if a voltage converter is used. Grounding is achieved via a 3.31 mm² (12 AWG) copper wire connected to a sea ground. Specific torque values must be observed: 14.7 N·m (11 lbf·ft) for pedestal mounting and 7.9 N·m (6 lbf·ft) for antenna installation, ensuring durability and safety. Applying marine sealant is essential to ensure watertightness at cable penetrations.
