Overview of the Alpha Compact 28/150 alternator for Volvo Penta
The Mastervolt Alpha Compact 28/150 alternator (part number 46228152) is designed for continuous power generation in marine and industrial environments. This 24 VDC model is specifically sized for direct mounting on Volvo Penta engines in the D4 to D13 series. It can be used as a primary replacement alternator or as a secondary power take-off (PTO) alternator dedicated to charging a service battery bank. This unit is supplied without the Alpha Pro III charge regulator, which is a mandatory component for managing output voltage and current.
Technical performance and raw data
The alternator delivers a nominal charge current of 150 A at 6,000 rpm (at 25 °C). Its excitation speed is set at 1,700 rpm, allowing it to provide a current of 28 to 30 A at an alternator rotation speed of 1,800 rpm (corresponding to engine idle speed). The maximum tolerated rotation speed is 16,000 rpm. The absorbed mechanical power (PTO) is 8.4 kW (11.4 hp), with a mechanical-to-electrical conversion efficiency of approximately 50 %. The maximum operating temperature reaches 120 °C, monitored by an integrated temperature probe with an RJ12 connection.
Mechanical design and integration
The Alpha Compact 28/150 weighs 7.9 kg. Its internal architecture reduces weight by 40 % and volume by 25 % compared to conventional alternators of the same capacity. Cooling is provided by two internal fans, requiring installation with a clockwise rotation direction (viewed from the pulley side). This specific model includes a multi-groove belt pulley suitable for Volvo Penta blocks as standard and is mounted via a pivoting arm. The unit is non-insulated (the negative output is connected to the metal housing). For installations requiring galvanic isolation, an optional insulating bushing kit (part number 48420240) is available, changing the mounting hole diameter from M10 to M8 or from M12 to M10. Electrical connections are made via two M8 studs for the positive output, an insulated fast-on connector for the W signal (tachometer), and a proprietary Mastervolt connector for the excitation current.
Positioning in the Mastervolt range and comparison
Within the Navico Group offering, the Alpha Compact series stands out from standard Alpha alternators (such as the Alpha 24/110 or Alpha 24/150 IV models) due to its compact format, the use of unidirectional internal fans instead of an external bidirectional fan, and a non-insulated base design. Unlike universal Alpha Compact versions, which are supplied without a pulley, this VP variant is ready for use with Volvo Penta engines. Combined with the Alpha Pro III regulator (sold separately), this system differs from original equipment alternators by applying a 3-stage charging algorithm compatible with lead-acid and lithium-ion battery banks, while offering full integration with the MasterBus communication protocol.
