Detailed description
Detailed description
The Sterling Power BM24121 battery maintainer is a dedicated energy management solution for onboard use, designed to maintain the charge of 12V auxiliary batteries from a 24V DC main system. Ideal for marine applications and recreational vehicles such as motorhomes, this device ensures a constant power supply for secondary equipment without risking discharge of the main starting or service battery.
FET technology and energy efficiency
Unlike relay-based solutions, the Sterling Power BM24121 maintainer uses field-effect transistors (FET). This technology ensures minimal power consumption, under 1 mA, making it particularly suitable for installations with limited energy sources, such as solar or wind power. The absence of physical contacts eliminates mechanical wear and noise, contributing to extended device lifespan. The device activates when the main 24V battery reaches approximately 26.6V, ensuring only a sufficiently charged battery powers the auxiliary circuit.
Charge maintenance and battery protection
With a 1A output current, the BM24121 is specifically a maintainer, not a fast charger. It is designed to compensate for the self-discharge of 12V auxiliary batteries and maintain their optimal charge level over the long term. This process prevents deep discharge, a major factor in battery degradation, thereby extending their lifespan. The final charging voltage to the auxiliary battery is approximately 0.2V lower than that of the main battery, ensuring gentle and continuous charging. For applications requiring higher charging currents or more complex management, Sterling Power offers alternatives such as voltage-sensitive relays (VSR) or battery-to-battery chargers (B2B), which are suitable for larger energy transfers between battery banks.
Installation and robustness
The BM24121 battery maintainer is compact (140 x 45 x 40 mm) and lightweight (0.25 kg), facilitating integration in confined spaces. Its IP65 protection rating makes it resistant to water splashes and dust, which is an advantage in marine environments, although installation in a dry, ventilated compartment is recommended to optimize longevity. The product comes with 1 meter of cable for simplified installation, requiring only the addition of approximately 10-amp fuses on the positive cables for adequate circuit protection.
