Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for dual-battery systems onboard, the Victron Energy Orion Tr Smart 12/12-18A (220W) isolated DC-DC charger provides a stable charging and power supply solution. It handles input voltages from 8 to 17V and delivers a nominal 12.2V output, adjustable from 10 to 15V. Its continuous 18A capacity at 40°C, with a power output of 220W (280W at 25°C), ensures efficient charging of service batteries with an efficiency of 87%. This model features 200 VDC galvanic isolation between input, output, and case, a critical safety feature for marine installations and vehicles.
Compatibility and smart features
Compatibility with smart alternators (Euro 5 and Euro 6) via engine-running detection prevents discharge of the starter battery when the alternator is not supplying power. The charger uses a three-stage adaptive charging algorithm (bulk, absorption, float) to optimize battery lifespan, whether lead-acid or lithium. Absorption time is adjustable via VictronConnect, offering flexibility for different battery types. Integrated Bluetooth Smart connectivity, via the VictronConnect app, provides full control over charging parameters and real-time monitoring. Features like input voltage lock and remote on/off increase integration flexibility.
System integration and protection
For higher current needs, an unlimited number of Orion Tr Smart units can be connected in parallel, enabling system scalability. The charger is protected against overload, short circuits, high temperatures (with automatic power reduction above 40°C), and connector overheating, ensuring reliable operation. Its IP43 protection rating for electronic components and IP22 for the connection area provides adequate resistance to marine environments. Compared to non-isolated DC-DC converters in the Orion range, this isolated model offers enhanced safety by preventing ground loops and protecting sensitive equipment from electrical disturbances, which is particularly relevant in complex marine environments. While other Victron Energy chargers like the Blue Smart IP65 are AC chargers, the Orion Tr Smart manages charging between two DC batteries, addressing a specific need for onboard systems where stable DC power or auxiliary charging is required.
