Detailed description
Detailed description
The Garmin Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for the GHP 12 is a central component of the Garmin GHP 12 autopilot system. Designed for sailboats from 20 to 70 feet and powerboats equipped with cable or solenoid steering systems and third-party hydraulic pumps, it manages and coordinates autopilot functions.
Features and technical integration
The ECU is specifically compatible with the GHP 12 autopilot system and can also be used with the GHP Reactor mechanical/retrofit/solenoid Corepack. It is a key element of the GHP 12 system architecture, which includes the CCU (Course Computer Unit), the GHC™ control unit, and the drive unit (sold separately). The ECU powers both the CCU and the drive unit and is designed to connect to a 12-24 Vdc power source, while the NMEA 2000 power cable requires 9-16 Vdc. The GHP 12 system is NMEA 2000® certified, facilitating integration and data sharing with other network devices, including Garmin chartplotters.
Steering precision and versatility
For optimal operation, the GHP 12 system requires feedback on rudder position to the ECU; some drive units, such as the Class A Drive, include a rudder angle sensor. The GHP 12 system enhances turning control precision and stability thanks to a gyroscope integrated into the CCU. The system is designed to work with various linear drive units, including Garmin Class A models (for sailboats up to 28,500 lbs displacement) and Class B models (for sailboats up to 79,000 lbs). When interfaced with a Garmin GWS 10 or compatible wind sensor, GPS, and other networked electronic equipment, the GHP 12 system provides autopilot functions such as heading hold, wind hold, programmed turns, tacking/jibing, and MFD route tracking. Control is via the GHC™ control unit with a 3.5-inch color display, supporting up to three GHC 10 controllers for multi-station use. Wireless control options via a remote or quatix® marine watch are also available. The GHP 12 is characterized by minimal power consumption, optimizing the autonomy of onboard systems.
