Detailed description
Detailed description
The Mastervolt Alpha Compact 28/150 alternator (part number 46628150) is a high-capacity 24 V charging system designed for marine and industrial electrical installations. Supplied without a pulley, this model uses a specific magnetic design that reduces its volume by 25 % and its weight by 40 % compared to conventional alternators. It is provided with the external Alpha Pro III charge regulator to ensure precise control of the charging cycle for all types of battery banks.
Electromechanical and thermal performance
This model delivers a nominal current of 150 A at 6000 rpm (at 25 °C) and guarantees a production of 28 A at idle engine speed of 1800 rpm. The starting rotation speed is set at 1700 rpm, with a maximum tolerance of 16000 rpm. The mechanical power required on the power take-off (PTO) is 8.4 kW (11.4 hp). Cooled by a double internal fan within an open structure, the alternator supports an operating temperature of up to 120 °C. An integrated temperature probe with RJ12 connection ensures active thermal regulation. The electrical connections include two M8 positive output terminals, an isolated W-signal connection for the tachometer, and a proprietary Mastervolt connector for the excitation current. The net weight of the alternator is 7.9 kg, with a total packaged weight of 11.4 kg.
Alpha Pro III regulation and MasterBus integration
The Alpha Pro III regulator controls the output voltage via a three-stage charging algorithm (Bulk, Absorption, Float). This device compensates for temperature and optimizes charging for lead-acid, Gel, AGM, and lithium-ion batteries. The absorption phase is automatically timed (approximately 30 minutes for lithium-ion technology) before switching to float voltage. This regulator natively integrates the MasterBus communication protocol, enabling configuration of voltage thresholds, real-time charge data monitoring, and alarm management directly from the onboard network.
Positioning within the range and comparison
Within the Mastervolt catalog, the Alpha Compact series stands out from the standard Alpha range with an optimized power-to-size ratio and an estimated 30 % reduction in fuel consumption. Compared to competing equipment such as the 24 V Balmar XT series, the Mastervolt Alpha Compact 28/150 offers the advantage of direct software integration thanks to the regulator's native MasterBus network, eliminating the need for additional data conversion gateways. Its lightweight design is specifically intended for cramped engine compartments requiring high continuous charging power, where a traditional 150 A alternator would be too heavy or bulky.
