Fishfinders: Explore the seabed with precision
A fishfinder is an essential instrument on board any vessel, allowing you to visualize depth, seabed composition, and the presence of any obstacles. At Skysat, drawing on our experience in offshore racing, we know that a reliable and high-performance fishfinder is indispensable for safe navigation and optimal performance. Here you will find a selection of premium fishfinders, chosen for their robustness, accuracy, and easy integration into complex electronic systems.
survey technologies
Modern fishfinders use different technologies to map the seabed. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each technology is crucial for choosing the right equipment for your needs and type of navigation. Here is an overview of the main technologies available:
- Traditional ultrasonic fishfinders: Proven, reliable, and affordable technology, ideal for coastal navigation and fishing. Provides a simple and effective representation of depth and bottom type.
- CHIRP sonar: Uses a wide range of frequencies for a more detailed and accurate image of the seabed. Allows you to distinguish fish and structures with increased clarity, even at great depths.
- SideScan sonars: Provide a panoramic view of the seabed, allowing the detection of submerged objects or structures over a wide area. Particularly useful for shipwreck searches or mapping unexplored areas.
- 3D sonar: Reconstructs a three-dimensional image of the seabed, offering an immersive and intuitive visualization. It allows for precise analysis of underwater topography and facilitates navigation in complex areas.
choose the right transducer
The transducer is the key component of the fishfinder, responsible for transmitting and receiving sound waves. Choosing the right transducer depends on several factors, including the sounding frequency, the desired maximum depth, and the boat's hull type. An incorrect selection can significantly impact the fishfinder's performance.
- Through-hole transducers: Installed through the casing, they offer the best performance in terms of depth and image clarity. They require drilling into the casing and professional installation.
- Bonded (In-Hull) transducers: Bonded to the inside of the hull, they do not require drilling and are easier to install. They may be less efficient than through-hull transducers, especially on thick or sandwich hulls.
- Transom-mounted transducers: Attach to the boat's transom, easy to install and adjust. Suitable for small boats and low-speed navigation.
- Retractable transducers: Combine the advantages of through-hull and transom-mounted transducers. Can be retracted for storage or maintenance.
integration and compatibility
Integrating the fishfinder into the onboard electronics network is crucial for optimal use. Modern fishfinders are compatible with NMEA 2000 and SeaTalk NG protocols, enabling seamless data exchange with other navigation instruments (GPS, navigation system, etc.). Be sure to verify the compatibility of all components before installation.
- NMEA 2000 compatibility: Enables standardized communication with other compatible devices, facilitating integration and data sharing.
- SeaTalk NG compatibility: Raymarine's proprietary protocol, offering optimized integration with the brand's instruments.
- Analog interfaces: Some fishfinders still offer analog interfaces for compatibility with older systems.
- Mapping software: Sounder data can be used by mapping software to create custom bathymetric maps.
💡 Skysat's advice
Before installation, check the condition of your battery and the fishfinder's power supply. Insufficient voltage can affect measurement accuracy and damage the device. For proper installation, contact a professional.
