Data switching: enabling onboard equipment to communicate

The Data switching collection includes interfaces, gateways, and modules that allow electronic systems on board to exchange information. It covers energy monitoring, protocol conversion, data transmission to local or remote networks, and digital switching of onboard circuits.

Victron GX monitoring and energy connections

GX modules centralize data from batteries, chargers, inverters, solar regulators, and compatible sensors. The Cerbo GX MK2 (ref 1100) serves as the communication hub for a Victron installation, while the Ekrano GX and Color Control GX add an integrated control screen. For remote display, the GX Touch 50 and GX Touch 70 screens complete installations around a Cerbo GX.

For configuration, diagnostics, or remote connection, the range also includes the MK3-USB-C (VE.Bus to USB-C) MK2, the VE.Direct to USB-C, the VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle, the Smart dongle, and the GlobalLink 520. These accessories prevent the need for multiple isolated monitoring solutions and simplify data reading from a computer, phone, or remote portal.

NMEA, SeaTalk NG, USB, and Wi-Fi gateways

Navigation gateways convert or transport data between standards. The Universal Engine and Control Interface ECI-100 links certain engine data to Raymarine displays, the Wireless NMEA Interface transmits NMEA data wirelessly, and the STNG to NMEA183 VHF Converter Kit (1xR52131, 2xA06031, 2xA06032, 1xA80265, 1xA06049, 1xA06039) helps connect an NMEA 0183 device to a SeaTalk NG architecture. For more targeted conversions, the DeviceNet to NMEA 0183 Converter or the Bidirectional NMEA2000 / NMEA0183 Interface ensure compatibility between modern buses and older equipment.

Actisense interfaces complement these uses with the NMEA2000 to Wi-Fi Interface to broadcast NMEA 2000 data over Wi-Fi and the USG-2 NMEA0183 to USB Interface to isolate and connect an NMEA 0183 link to a computer. They are useful when you want to use navigation data in software, a logbook, or a test setup.

MasterBus, CZone, and digital switching

For electrical management, MasterBus and CZone accessories allow extending, interfacing, or controlling proprietary networks. The MasterBus Repeater extends a MasterBus network, the USB MasterBus Interface and the Serial MasterBus Interface provide configuration access, while the MasterBus Converter Interface and the MasterBus Digital Input (4 channels) add integration points between devices.

For digital switching architectures, the CZone NMEA 2000 Network Bridge Interface Module links CZone to the NMEA 2000 network, the Boat Switch Digital Switching Module simplifies circuit control on board, and the Empirbus WDU v2 is designed for Empirbus installations. These solutions should not be confused with simple network accessories: they directly participate in the control or monitoring of electrical functions.

Choosing a data switching solution

Before selecting, list the protocols present on board, the data to be transmitted, the required conversion direction, the need for galvanic isolation, the desired monitoring method, and power constraints. An NMEA 2000/NMEA 0183 gateway, a GX module, a MasterBus interface, or a digital switching solution do not fulfill the same role.
